Well, its been a while, and for good reason. I have been waiting for something to shout about after a string of crazy bad luck!
It all kicked off very nicely however, at the start of June for me in the Welsh Championships. This was one of my major targets for the season, I really wanted to get a top10 here. The standard was very high this year, many full time pros, and maybe the strongest field recently. With all this in mind to come away with 9th place ,after a late move with a small group on the final lap, meant I was a happy chap!
The following weekend I had the UCI Beaumont Trophy. One of the premier events in the British Cycling calendar. I finished in a small group last year (only around 40% actually finish!) but this year I wanted to push things a little and see if I could become more involved in the race. This was all going really well until I punctures 2hours in while sitting comfortably in the Peloton! Race Over!
Ah well, bit of bad luck, not the next one a 4up 25 mile TTT with my team mates. Well…… this ended very badly! I hit a pothole at around half distance and went straight over the bars. Instead of celebrating a win, I spent a night in A&E with 2 cracked ribs, a cracked collarbone and a very much un-pretty face!
I was keen to get back into competition. We are made of tough stuff in Wales and fortunately I recovered quickly to get back to racing at the Smithfield RR 2.5 weeks after my crash. Result = Puncture after and hour and no neutral service so race over!
Well things come in 3s, I thought so surely bad luck was over now. My training has been going well and my legs have been feeling great on al my races, so with Bole Hill coming up the following weekend I was STILL optimistic. Bole Hill is a notoriously very tough race, its very hilly and suite me. Last 2 seasons I have been 8th and 7th so top5 was the target. Going into the bottom of the climb my chain dropped and wrapped itself around my rear mech, destroying both!
Sometime you just have to laugh or cry…..I laughed, it is only bike racing after all!
Things are taking a turn for the better however. like I say my legs feel great at the moment and the power is good. Despite the calendar being very poor for e/1/2 races post July, I still have some good events to get stuck into.
Unfortunately my TT crash has put the TT bike out of action for a little but I got stuck into an Open 25 the past weekend. With no idea what to expect, I put some clip-ons on my road bike and the Pro-Lite disc in the rear and rode a 52:33. 2nd place overall too! Wow pleased with that and a confirmation the legs are there. Now onto the final part of the year, and just maybe the Hill Climb season too!
Massive thanks as ever go to our sponsors at VCUK Champion System. Particularly Shark Bikes, Pro Lite wheels and Champion System, as with my crash I have broken some of your stuff!! Eeek!
